The Electric Power Corporation (EPC) unveiled three new diesel generators at the Fuluasou substation on Friday, a move set to enhance the reliability and sufficiency of power supply amid growing electricity demand.
Significant Investment
EPC invested $10.7 million in acquiring a total of four generators. Three of these new generators are now operational at Fuluasou, while the fourth is servicing Savaii. Each generator has a capacity of producing 2 megawatts of electricity, significantly bolstering the nation’s power infrastructure.
Meeting Demand
Minister of Works, Transport, and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Vaai, highlighted that the existing power generation infrastructure includes 32 megawatts from the Fiaga generator, hydropower, solar, and wind power. With the country using 30 megawatts of this capacity, the previous 2-megawatt reserve was insufficient, prompting the procurement of the new generators.
Preparations for CHOGM
The new generators are also timely, as Samoa prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October. These generators will ensure a reliable power supply for both public use and the high-level meeting, enhancing Samoa’s readiness for the event.
Commitment to Affordable Electricity
Olo commended EPC’s efforts in providing affordable electricity to the public. Despite rising diesel costs, the corporation has managed to reduce power costs from 2021 to date, reflecting their commitment to public service.
Acknowledging Key Contributors
The HNAC Technology Company, the main contractor for the project, was recognized for their expertise, dedication, and collaboration. Olo also acknowledged EPC for their initiative and drive in making this project a reality.
Celebratory Inauguration
The Speaker of the House, Papalii Lio Masipau, had the honor of cutting the ribbon to officially inaugurate the new generators, marking a significant milestone in Samoa’s power infrastructure development.
