Addu City, Maldives – FENAKA Corporation has initiated the deployment of a 1600-kilowatt generator to Addu City amid persistent power outages caused by an inadequate supply of electricity.

During peak hours, Addu City’s electricity demand can reach up to 12 megawatts. Despite having 20 generator sets in the Hithadhoo powerhouse with a combined capacity of 26.8 megawatts, five of these generators are currently out of commission. This leaves the city’s maximum electricity supply at just 15 megawatts.

FENAKA noted that, in addition to the generator shortfall, power outages are exacerbated by cables being severed during road development activities.

To address the electricity shortage in the second most populous city in the Maldives, FENAKA is bringing in a 1600-kilowatt generator. Environment Minister Ibrahim Thoriq has assured that this new generator will resolve the city’s electricity issues within the month.

Minister Thoriq criticized the previous administration under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, stating that the central power station in Hithadhoo was neglected and saw no development during his five-year term. He pointed out that no additional generators were procured, and the currently used generators were not installed by the former government.

In April, the Maldivian government signed an agreement with a Chinese company to tackle Addu City’s electricity issues. FENAKA expressed confidence that the completion of this project would provide a long-term solution, ensuring stable power for the next two decades.
