Virginians Warned on Generator Safety as Tropical Storm Debby Approaches

As Tropical Storm Debby threatens central Virginia with intense winds and heavy rains, officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution with generators if power outages occur. Misuse of these devices can lead to fatal consequences.

Henrico Fire Department Battalion Chief Doug Reynolds emphasized, “Don’t jeopardize your family’s safety for the sake of restoring power temporarily. The risk is simply not worth it.”

Generators are not universally suitable for all homes. It is crucial to consult with a qualified electrician or contractor to determine the appropriate type and capacity for your needs. “A professional will assess whether your generator can support essential appliances like refrigerators, lighting, or air conditioning,” Reynolds advised.

Safety measures are paramount when using generators. Ensure the generator is turned off and allowed to cool before refueling to prevent potential fires. Additionally, position the generator at least 20 feet away from your home to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. “Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and undetectable without proper equipment,” Reynolds warned, highlighting the severe risks associated with this “silent killer.”

To safeguard against carbon monoxide leaks, install a battery-operated detector. If the alarm sounds, evacuate the premises immediately and contact emergency services.

Even after the storm subsides and power is restored, maintain a safe distance between the generator and your home. Avoid storing the generator in enclosed spaces such as garages or under decks, as hazardous fumes can still escape when the device is not in use.

Reynolds also advised that carbon monoxide detectors are a valuable safety tool for all households, not just those using generators, due to the various potential sources of this dangerous gas.
