In a landmark achievement for offshore energy technology, Tianjin Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC) has delivered the world’s first 5MW offshore high-temperature flue gas waste heat power generation device. This cutting-edge equipment, delivered yesterday in Binhai New Area, represents a significant advancement in harnessing waste heat from offshore oil and gas field power stations. Its deployment aligns with the global push towards green and low-carbon development, supporting the ambitious “dual carbon” goals.
Traditionally, offshore platforms generate electricity by burning self-produced oil and gas, resulting in substantial high-temperature flue gas emissions, which are a major source of carbon emissions in offshore operations. The new waste heat power generation device addresses this issue by capturing the high-temperature flue gas produced during power station operations and using it as a heat source. This heat drives an organic medium within the device, which then powers an expander to generate clean electricity.
The introduction of this device will significantly enhance the comprehensive utilization of flue gas waste heat at offshore oil and gas fields. Expected to boost the main power station’s energy efficiency by 7%, the device will reduce the consumption of crude oil and natural gas. Projections indicate that the device will produce up to 40 million kWh of electricity annually—enough to meet the needs of 30,000 households. Additionally, it is anticipated to save approximately 300 million cubic meters of natural gas and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 800,000 tons, which is equivalent to planting 7.5 million trees.
Li Wei, Chief Engineer of COOEC’s Special Equipment Branch, highlighted that the core components of the power generation device, including expanders and generators, are entirely designed and manufactured in China. This innovation showcases COOEC’s commitment to technological independence and the development of a robust industrial ecosystem. By collaborating with various enterprises across the industrial chain, COOEC aims to advance China’s high-end marine engineering equipment manufacturing capabilities and technical expertise.
