High Court of Bombay at Goa Considers Allowing 150KVA Generators for Trawlers Amidst Controversy

by sthv

The Fisheries Department has petitioned the High Court of Bombay at Goa to approve the use of 150KVA generators on trawlers. The department’s lawyers presented this request before the court on Monday. The matter, which has been under review for some time, will resume in court on Tuesday.

The Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott, a local fishermen’s association, argues that 150KVA generators are unnecessary for powering standard trawler equipment, with the exception of high-voltage LED bulbs. The group highlights the potential environmental impact, suggesting that allowing these generators could lead to significant damage to fish populations in the Arabian Sea. They caution that if these generators are permitted within the next six to twelve months, it could have detrimental effects on the region’s fish catch.

The association also voices concerns about the broader implications for traditional fishermen, comparing their potential plight to that of farmers facing severe financial distress. They warn that the pressures on fishermen could lead to dire consequences similar to those experienced in the farming community, where daily suicides have become a tragic reality.
