Rosatom Delivers Key Components for Xudabu-4 Nuclear Plant in China

by sthv

Rosatom has successfully dispatched a critical reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and one of the four steam generators for the Xudabu-4 nuclear power plant, a major project under development in Liaoning province, northeast China.

The Xudabu-4 facility, also referred to as Xudabao or Xudapu, commenced construction in May 2022. This nuclear power plant will feature a conventional pressurized water reactor, utilizing advanced Russian VVER-1200 technology.

The RPV is a pivotal component in the reactor setup, serving as the containment for nuclear reactor coolant, the core shroud, and the reactor core along with its fuel. It ranks among the largest and most essential reactor parts in any nuclear facility.

The steam generators, which function as heat exchangers, are designed to convert the heat generated by nuclear reactions into steam. This steam is then utilized to drive the plant’s turbines, ensuring efficient energy production.

Initially, the Xudabu project was slated to include six CAP1000 reactors, with the first phase covering Units 1 and 2. However, the scope was revised to incorporate two VVER-1200 reactors for Units 3 and 4. Site preparation for the project began in November 2010, with the current configuration now featuring a mix of reactor types. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Xudabu is now home to four units under construction: CAP1000 reactors for Units 1 and 2, and VVER-1200 reactors for Units 3 and 4.
