NYK Line has announced a breakthrough in marine energy efficiency with the introduction of its Hz Navi system, designed to reduce fuel consumption by optimizing the frequency of marine generators.
Traditionally, marine generators operate at a fixed frequency to ensure that onboard equipment, including pumps and motors, function properly under all conditions. This standard frequency often results in excess power consumption during routine navigation. To address this, NYK Line has developed the Hz Navi system, which adjusts generator frequencies to more closely align with operational needs, thereby lowering fuel usage.
The Hz Navi system operates within the parameters set by maritime classification rules and leverages a joint patent held by NYK Line and Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. During a comprehensive testing phase on the NYK-operated bulk carrier White Princess, conducted from April 2023 to April 2024, the system demonstrated a significant energy reduction. The test revealed a fuel savings of approximately 10% when operating at around 57 Hz, with no reported anomalies affecting the vessel’s safety or performance.
The successful trial involved key industry players, including NYK Line, MTI Co., Oshima Shipbuilding, Terasaki Electric, and Daihatsu Diesel MFG Co., highlighting a collaborative effort in advancing marine technology and sustainability.
