Stratford, Ontario — The provincial government has announced a substantial $1.3-million grant to support the expansion of Sommers Generator Systems, a well-established manufacturer based in Rostock. This financial boost is set to fuel a $9.2-million expansion project that could generate up to 50 new jobs in the Stratford region.

The funding, unveiled during a Friday announcement, is part of Ontario’s commitment to advancing rural employment and supporting local industry. “Having grown up in rural Ontario, I recognize the critical role of creating and maintaining high-quality jobs within our communities,” said Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae. “This investment demonstrates that valuable employment opportunities don’t have to be confined to larger urban centers. Our government is dedicated to fostering these prospects right here in Stratford and Perth County.”

Sommers Generator Systems, which has been a staple of the region since its inception in 1936, plans to leverage this grant to advance its production capabilities. The expansion will involve the development of new hydrogen generators and the relocation of natural gas generator production from Wisconsin to Ontario. “We have confidence in the world-class craftsmanship available locally,” remarked Chris McGregor, President of Sommers. “Given our commitment to quality, it makes perfect sense to centralize all our operations here.”

The company has evolved significantly over its nearly nine-decade history, transitioning from wind-powered units to modern generators fueled by gas, propane, hydrogen, and even battery-powered systems. This shift reflects broader trends in the energy sector towards cleaner technologies.

Stratford Mayor Martin Ristma, who was present for the announcement, emphasized the positive impact on both Perth County and the city itself. “The expansion of local industry is crucial for Stratford’s economy. While we’re seeing overall growth in manufacturing, the expansion of established companies like Sommers is particularly vital,” Ristma said.

The grant comes through Ontario’s Regional Development Program under the Advanced Manufacturing & Innovation Competitiveness stream, which is investing approximately $170 million provincewide. Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli highlighted the importance of such investments, stating, “Our government is committed to supporting local manufacturers as they grow and create well-paying jobs. This investment will bolster Ontario’s economy and build stronger communities.”

Sommers’ focus on hydrogen and power generation technologies underscores the shift towards cleaner energy solutions. McGregor anticipates that hydrogen will soon surpass battery technology as a leading power source. “Hydrogen is poised to become the dominant technology in power generation as we progress,” he added.

With this significant provincial support, Perth County and Southwestern Ontario are positioned to become key players in the emerging field of new energy technologies.
