Westinghouse Electric Company has introduced a groundbreaking Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) system tailored specifically for the nuclear sector. Dubbed the Hive System, this innovative tool aims to enhance cost efficiency and scheduling across all stages of the reactor lifecycle, including design, licensing, manufacturing, construction, and operations.

The Hive System provides Westinghouse’s global clients with access to exclusive knowledge and expertise developed by the company’s engineers and data scientists, facilitated through a secure system infrastructure and software. This advanced system is designed to optimize maintenance planning, streamline inspections, and ensure operational teams receive timely and relevant information.

Central to the Hive System is the bertha Nuclear Large Language Model AI, named in honor of Bertha Lamme—the first woman in the U.S. to earn a mechanical engineering degree and the first female engineer hired by Westinghouse. The bertha System boasts a suite of finely-tuned models, methods, and tools adaptable to a variety of applications.

Lou Martinez Sancho, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of R&D at Westinghouse, highlighted the system’s potential, stating, “Westinghouse will leverage the Hive System to develop bespoke solutions for our clients. This includes applications in preventive plant maintenance, nuclear fuel safety, and manufacturing optimization.”

The Hive System is set to revolutionize the nuclear industry by offering state-of-the-art technological solutions and enhancing operational efficiency.
