GE Vernova has announced a significant milestone in its European onshore wind expansion with a major agreement in Romania. The deal with Public Power Corporation Renewables (PPC R) involves supplying, installing, and commissioning 23 of GE Vernova’s advanced 6.1-MW turbines, each featuring a 158-meter rotor diameter, for a wind farm in Vaslui County.
Finalized in the second quarter of 2024, this contract marks a substantial increase in GE Vernova’s presence in Romania, adding 140 megawatts (MW) to its existing installed capacity of over 700 MW in the region.
Gilan Sabatier, Chief Commercial Officer for GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind business in International Markets, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion. “We are thrilled to extend our footprint in Romania with one of Southeast Europe’s leading renewable energy companies,” Sabatier said. “This deal underscores our commitment to advancing wind energy through our reliable turbines and deep grid expertise, contributing significantly to Romania’s and Europe’s renewable energy goals.”
The initial turbine deliveries are slated for the first half of 2025, with the project expected to be fully operational by the end of the year. GE Vernova highlighted that the agreement is designed to support Romania’s ambitious renewable energy targets, including a planned 5 GW increase in wind capacity by 2030.
“We are honored that PPC Renewables has selected GE Vernova turbines for their Vaslui project,” Sabatier continued. “This collaboration aligns with Romania’s energy strategy and our mission to deliver cutting-edge technology to support global electrification and decarbonization efforts.”
Konstantinos Mavros, CEO of PPC Renewables and Deputy CEO of PPC Group’s Renewable Energy Sector, acknowledged the significance of the deal. “We are excited to finalize this supply agreement with GE Vernova for our landmark wind park in Vaslui County,” Mavros stated. “This project, featuring 23 turbines with a total installed capacity of 140 MW, is a key part of our expanding energy portfolio. PPC is now the largest clean energy provider in Southeast Europe, with a total renewable capacity of 4.7 GW, ongoing projects totaling 2.8 GW, and a robust project pipeline of 20 GW.”
GE Vernova’s Onshore Wind division boasts a global portfolio of approximately 56,000 turbines and nearly 120 gigawatts of installed capacity, underscoring its leadership in the wind energy sector.
