Eaton is set to showcase its latest innovations in hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle technology at the IAA Transportation 2024 trade show, scheduled to take place in Hanover, Germany, from September 17-22.

Among the highlights will be Eaton’s new hydrogen recirculation blower, a component designed to enhance the performance of hydrogen fuel cell systems. Utilizing Eaton’s TVS technology, this blower recirculates surplus hydrogen back to the fuel cell stack’s inlet. This process not only extends the system’s longevity by aiding in anode purging and managing water output more effectively but also mitigates cold start issues. Additionally, it optimizes hydrogen utilization to boost fuel cell stack efficiency and responsiveness.

Eaton will also present its TVS supercharger for hydrogen internal combustion engines (ICEs). This supercharger provides immediate airflow at low engine speeds and features the capability to disengage when not required, thereby reducing parasitic energy loss. The unit can be fine-tuned to work in tandem with standard turbochargers for enhanced performance in super-turbo applications.

The company will introduce its new generation of hollow valves designed specifically for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. These hollow valves operate at lower temperatures, minimizing the risk of engine knock and allowing for the use of more economical materials in their production.

Additionally, Eaton will highlight its 1.5-stroke engine brake, engineered to deliver 40% more braking power at low speeds compared to traditional engine brakes. In tests, the combination of the Eaton supercharger and the 1.5-stroke engine brake resulted in up to a 20% increase in braking power.

These advancements underscore Eaton’s commitment to advancing hydrogen technology and enhancing the efficiency and performance of commercial vehicles powered by hydrogen.
