Vestas has secured a landmark contract for the Empire Wind 1 project, marking its first offshore order in the U.S. The deal with Equinor encompasses the supply of 54 V236-15.0 MW turbines, totaling 810 MW for the New York-based offshore wind initiative.

This agreement represents Vestas’ inaugural offshore order in the U.S. market and involves not only the provision and delivery of the turbines but also their commissioning. The deal includes a five-year service agreement, alongside a long-term support contract.

Turbine deliveries are slated to commence in 2026, with the project expected to be completed by 2027.

Josh Irwin, Senior Vice President of Offshore Sales at Vestas North America, highlighted the significance of this deal: “Offshore wind is set to play a pivotal role in expanding America’s energy landscape. With this announcement, we are advancing toward establishing a robust U.S. offshore wind market.”

Irwin added that the order is a significant milestone for both New York and the broader U.S. offshore wind industry. “We’re excited to deliver a proven, reliable product that will help New York achieve its ambitious offshore wind energy goals and provide resilient wind energy to its communities.”

The Empire Wind 1 project also includes a major transformation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) in Sunset Park, New York. SBMT is set to become one of the nation’s largest dedicated port facilities for offshore wind, providing essential infrastructure for the deployment of the turbines. This includes staging, pre-assembly activities, load-in, load-out, and transportation of turbine components and equipment.

Amy McGinty, Vice President of Customer Project Execution at Vestas North America, emphasized the commitment to a sustainable supply chain: “The expansion of SBMT is a game-changer for Empire Wind 1 and beyond. We are fully committed to building a supply chain and industry in the U.S. offshore market that’s built to last.”

Since its launch, Vestas’ V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine has garnered over 13 GW of firm orders and preferred supplier agreements worldwide. The turbine received its type certification last year, underscoring Vestas’ growing influence in the global offshore wind sector.
