FPT Industrial has officially launched its new dual-fuel N67 Hythane engine at the IAA Transportation 2024 exhibition in Hanover, Germany. This engine marks a significant advancement in the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation.
With a robust history in natural gas engine production spanning 25 years and over 100,000 units sold globally, FPT is poised to expand its eco-friendly offerings. The N67 Hythane engine builds on this legacy, utilizing a blend of hydrogen and natural gas to enhance combustion efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 50% compared to conventional natural gas usage.
The innovative engine is compatible with both compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) and can be retrofitted to existing natural gas engines. Notably, the fuel blend does not adversely affect the engine’s performance or the functionality of the three-way catalyst and CPF aftertreatment systems.
Featuring a 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder configuration, the N67 Hythane employs a port-type dual-fuel injection system that adapts the fuel mixture based on real-time operating conditions. This process is managed by an integrated engine control unit, ensuring optimal performance.
The engine delivers a maximum power output of 206 kW (280 hp) and achieves a peak torque of 1,000 Nm, making it suitable for both truck and bus applications. FPT describes the N67 Hythane as a “ready-to-install bridge solution” in the transition towards full hydrogen internal combustion engines (ICE).
