MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) has secured a significant contract to provide propulsion systems for two Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) for the Canadian Coast Guard. This partnership is part of a broader initiative under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) by the Canadian government, in collaboration with GE Power Conversion.

As part of the deal, MAN ES will supply engines, shafts, and propellers for the vessels’ integrated diesel-electric propulsion systems, alongside comprehensive Integrated Logistics Services (ILS) documentation. The company will also implement a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for each engine to enhance decarbonization efforts.

Each ship will be equipped with four MAN 6L32/44CR engines, generating 3,600 kW per unit. These engines utilize advanced technology, including common rail electronic fuel injection, high-efficiency turbochargers, electronic hardware, and variable valve timing. The innovative common rail injection system is engineered to support prolonged low-load operations and rapid load pickups, essential for tasks such as ice ramming. Coupled with the SCR system, the design optimizes both fuel consumption and emissions, ensuring compliance with IMO Tier III regulations without compromising engine performance.

Additionally, the AOPS will feature two MAN Alpha-branded five-bladed, bolted propellers that adhere to PC5 regulations and can be replaced underwater. These propellers are specifically designed to handle high cavitation inception speeds and potential shock impacts, making them ideal for mission-critical scenarios. They also ensure silent operation, minimizing hydro-acoustic signatures and reducing underwater-radiated noise.

“The MAN 32/44CR engine is perfectly suited to deliver the power and reliability necessary for the harsh conditions faced by Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships, while its Tier III compliance is essential for operations in sensitive environments,” commented Daniel Eberhardt, Sales Manager Navy, Four-Stroke Marine at MAN Energy Solutions. “This order aligns seamlessly with our goal of providing comprehensive propulsion packages.”

The vessels will be constructed by Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, Canada. Additionally, local MAN Canada PrimeServ organizations in Halifax and Vancouver will offer ongoing service support to the Canadian Coast Guard throughout the vessels’ operational lifespan.
