The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, a collaborative effort between Iberdrola and Masdar, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of turbine installation. The project, boasting a capacity of 476 megawatts (MW), features 50 MVOW V174 wind turbines, each capable of generating 9.53 MW. These state-of-the-art turbines, supplied by Vestas, feature a rotor blade diameter of 174 meters and a sweeping area comparable to 3.3 football fields, with a hub height of 107 meters above sea level.

Installation work commenced in May 2024, utilizing the Blue Tern, an offshore jack-up installation vessel operated by Fred.Olsen Windcarrier. Situated 30 kilometers northeast of Rügen Island along the German coastline, the Baltic Eagle project is set to provide renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households upon becoming fully operational.

Iberdrola’s executive chairman, Ignacio Galán, hailed the installation’s completion as a pivotal moment in a record year for the company’s offshore wind initiatives. “With this project, Iberdrola is on track to achieve nearly 5,000 MW of offshore capacity worldwide by the end of 2026,” he stated. Galán emphasized that the Baltic Eagle wind farm, the second in Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, will significantly aid Germany’s energy transition by supplying clean, domestic energy to nearly half a million homes while contributing to emission reductions.

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, described the announcement as a landmark achievement for the Baltic Eagle project, which marks the beginning of the partnership between Masdar and Iberdrola. “Offshore wind is a vital technology for the energy transition, and we anticipate a long and fruitful collaboration that will yield transformative utility-scale projects in support of the net-zero journey across Europe and beyond,” he remarked.

The Baltic Eagle project is part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, which also includes the operational Wikinger wind farm (350 MW) and the planned Windanker project (315 MW). By 2026, Iberdrola anticipates its Baltic Hub will exceed a total capacity of 1.1 GW, driving investments of around €3.7 billion. Notably, the Baltic Eagle marks Masdar’s inaugural project with Iberdrola and its first undertaking in Germany, resulting in the company’s largest euro-denominated financing to date.
