MAN Engines is enhancing its marine diesel engine offerings with the introduction of the MAN D3872 LE427, specifically designed for heavy-duty applications. This new engine variant is set to meet the stringent EU Stage V emission standards for inland navigation, which include limits of 1.8 g/kWh for nitrogen oxides (NOx), 0.015 g/kWh for particulate matter (PM), and a particle number (PN) limit of 1×10¹² particles/kWh.
The D3872 LE427 offers a robust output of 920 kW (1,250 hp) at 1,800 rpm and features an advanced exhaust gas aftertreatment system, combining a diesel particulate filter with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). This high-performance engine is tailored for demanding maritime operations, including push convoys, tugboats, barges, passenger vessels, and specialized ships.
Consistent with MAN Engines’ commitment to sustainability, the new model is certified for use with regenerative diesel according to the EN15940 standard in Europe and the ASTM D975 specification in the U.S. It is also available with an optional outer skin cooling system for those requiring alternatives to a closed cooling circuit.
Set to launch in the third quarter of 2025, the D3872 will initially meet EU Stage V regulations, with additional certifications for EPA Tier 4, IMO Tier III, and IMO Tier II anticipated in 2026.
With the introduction of this heavy-duty variant, MAN Engines now offers a comprehensive range of EU Stage V-compliant engines for inland waterway vessels, covering outputs from 290 kW to 1,066 kW (394 to 1,450 hp). The expanded portfolio includes inline six-cylinder engines as well as V12 models with displacements of 12.4 L, 24.2 L, and 29.6 L, catering to light, medium, and heavy-duty marine applications.
