A barangay on Haponan Island managed to keep its lights on during the severe tropical storm Kristine, thanks to a microgrid set up by FP Island Energy Corporation.

First Philippine Holdings (FPH) announced that the microgrid provided a steady power supply as the storm hit the area. Larry Evangelista, the general manager of FP Island, reported that the generators and distribution lines experienced minimal damage from strong winds and fallen trees.

In addition to the Haponan microgrid, FP Island operates two others in Lahuy and Quinalasag. These microgrids were shut down as a precaution before Kristine made landfall. However, normal operations resumed in 11 of the 13 barangays just 48 hours after the storm passed.

Microgrids are crucial for providing electricity to remote areas that are not connected to the main power grid. The Haponan microgrid features a renewable energy component that includes solar energy and battery storage, along with a diesel generator for conventional power.

Since its launch in December 2021, the Haponan microgrid has significantly improved the lives of residents. It has provided internet access, enabling teachers and students to utilize multimedia for educational purposes. Additionally, it has supported local entrepreneurs in running online businesses, printing services, and ice-making operations.

Before the microgrids were established, many residents had no electricity or relied on diesel generators that operated only a few hours each day.
