A Nigerian man recently expressed his shock online after discovering that his 24-year-old apprentice from the Benin Republic didn’t know how to refuel a generator. The revelation has since sparked widespread reactions on social media.

The man shared the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that he had asked his apprentice to refuel the generator, only for the young man to admit that he had no idea how to do it. When pressed further, the apprentice revealed that generators are not commonly used in Benin Republic, leaving the Nigerian man both astonished and embarrassed.

@TheOluwatayo shared his own experience:

“Yes now, I travelled to that country some years ago and where we went to inside bush for funeral, they had light 24/7, like the houses are mud houses oooooo, Dem get light 24/7. Let me stop here.”

@OMOTAYOLAWSON added:

“In 2021, I spent a few days in Cotonou. One evening we were strolling and I started laughing. My host asked me what was funny. I told him we’ve been walking for 30 minutes at night, and there’s light everywhere with no generator noise… food for thought.”

@Kasper1174805 commented:

“Shame catch you? Chicken is very cheap in Benin Republic. When they take their light, it’s announced on the radio, and Nigeria provides them with light. When they tell you Nigerian politicians are heartless, you’ll realize it’s no joke.”

@Chris_steph28 shared:

“I was there in 2014 for my school holidays. Throughout my stay, I didn’t hear a generator once. When we came back from my aunt’s shop, we would just tap the switch, and boom, light immediately.”

Other users, such as @livy26nov, @Bezaleelchika1, and @Papahassan, also shared their personal experiences of reliable electricity in neighboring countries, contrasting it with the frequent power outages in Nigeria.

The post has led to further discussions about the differences in energy access and the growing concerns about power shortages in Nigeria compared to some of its neighbors.
