Residents of the Baratang region are enduring severe power shortages, with two crucial power generator sets still out of service due to ongoing repairs. These generators, hired from a Delhi-based company, have not been fixed despite repeated assurances from local officials. As a result, the community is facing significant hardships, according to Mr. R. Alager Swamy, the Zilla Parishad Member (ZPM) for Baratang Constituency.
Speaking to Andaman Sheekha Daily, Mr. Alager Swamy expressed frustration over the situation, claiming that officials have repeatedly promised to repair the generators but have failed to deliver. “The people of Baratang are suffering due to the defunct generators. The officials have been giving false assurances that the generators will be repaired soon, but nothing has changed,” he said.
Currently, power is being supplied from the Rangat Power House, but Mr. Swamy noted that the supply is insufficient. “Power is consumed in Bakultala and Kadamtala before it even reaches Baratang, leaving the supply weak. This has caused damage to household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and televisions,” he added.
To address the power shortage, Mr. Swamy is demanding the installation of a 750 KVA generator set for Baratang to ensure a steady and reliable supply, especially in emergency situations. “The residents need a sustainable power source, and this generator would solve the problem. The current situation is unacceptable, and the people of Baratang cannot wait any longer,” he said.
If the generators are not repaired soon, Mr. Swamy warned that the residents of Baratang would be left with no choice but to protest. He has given officials a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the issue and restore uninterrupted power supply to the region. “If this problem is not addressed within the week, I, along with the locals, will stage a dharna in front of the Electricity Office in Baratang,” he threatened.
