Godwin Obaseki, former Governor of Edo State, has criticized the current leadership under Governor Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of incompetence and mismanagement, particularly regarding the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS). Obaseki’s statement, issued through his Media Adviser Crusoe Osagie, claims that the incumbent governor’s lack of vision and leadership is undoing the progress made during his own tenure, particularly in revitalizing the state’s media assets.
Obaseki highlighted several key achievements from his time in office, including the connection of EBS to the 95MW Ossiomo Power Plant, the provision of two standby generators (500KVA and 200KVA), and efforts to ensure that the station was self-sustaining. The former governor expressed concern over the recent delivery of two additional generators (150KVA and 135KVA) to EBS, questioning the need for more power sources when the station was already adequately supplied.
In his statement, Obaseki asked several pointed questions:
Why would a facility already powered 24 hours by Ossiomo, with two backup generators, require additional generators?
Does Governor Okpebholo plan to run EBS entirely on diesel, considering the high costs associated with this?
How will the state sustain the operation of these new generators?
Is this decision a waste of resources that could be better spent on more impactful projects?
Obaseki also emphasized the progress EBS made under his administration, noting that the station was no longer dependent on government subventions. Instead, it was generating revenue for the state government. He urged Okpebholo to demonstrate greater leadership and governance capacity, accusing him of undermining the achievements of his predecessor.
The statement concluded with Obaseki reiterating that Okpebholo’s lack of management skills was pushing the state’s progress backward. He called on the governor to focus on building his capacity for effective leadership rather than deflecting attention with misleading press statements.
