Local governments across the country are increasingly focused on improving their emergency power capabilities, with Westmoreland County and Inverness City Council making significant strides in this area.
In Westmoreland County, officials are set to approve the purchase of a new backup generator for the Greensburg courthouse complex, a much-needed upgrade estimated to cost around $2.2 million. Commissioner Sean Kertes stressed the importance of the project, stating, “This building has been neglected for so long, and this is us doing our due diligence to maintain this building.” The new generator will replace the outdated unit that has been in use since the early 1970s and will provide enhanced power capabilities to ensure the courthouse remains operational during power outages. The project is funded partly by a $500,000 state grant and capital funds from next year’s budget. The installation is expected to be completed by late 2024.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the state, Inverness City Council is also taking steps to improve its emergency power infrastructure. During a meeting on December 17, city officials approved the purchase of a backup generator for the Citrus Booster Plant, which will help maintain water supply during power disruptions. In addition to the generator, Fire Chief Bobby Bessler is working to secure federal funding through FEMA’s 2025 Assistance to Firefighters Grants. The grant, which distributes $8.7 billion to improve safety for fire departments nationwide, will provide Inverness with $192,744 to acquire new portable radios and mobile units for fire department vehicles.
These actions reflect a broader trend among local governments to prioritize resilience against power outages and other emergencies. By investing in backup power solutions and securing grants for equipment upgrades, municipalities are not only enhancing operational safety but also ensuring the continuity of services during unforeseen disruptions.
With the continued reliance on aging infrastructure posing growing risks, these investments are seen as proactive measures to ensure the safety and stability of essential services. Both Westmoreland County and Inverness are leading by example, demonstrating a commitment to community resilience and preparedness in the face of emergencies.
