NorthWestern Energy has announced plans to provide electric supply services to Atlas Power Group for its data center in Butte, Montana.
The energy supply is expected to begin in 2026 with an initial load of 75 megawatts, with potential growth of up to an additional 75 megawatts in the next three to five years.
Brian Bird, President and CEO of NorthWestern Energy, highlighted the company’s strategic investments in energy generation and its balanced energy portfolio, saying, “These resources allow us to serve large new customers like Atlas Power Group’s data center while continuing to offer affordable and reliable energy to our existing customers.”
Jeff Young, President and COO of Atlas Power Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We’re excited to work with NorthWestern Energy to supply cost-effective and reliable energy to our flagship data center. Securing long-term, predictable power is essential for supporting our expansion and investments. We’re also committed to enhancing our data center’s demand response capabilities to improve grid reliability for Montana customers.”
Earlier this week, NorthWestern Energy also announced an agreement to provide energy services to a developer planning new data centers in Montana.
NorthWestern Energy is recognized as one of the cleanest energy companies in the U.S., with the majority of its power generation coming from hydro, wind, and solar. The company’s recent addition of on-demand energy from the Yellowstone County Generating Station, along with expected capacity from the Colstrip Plant starting in January 2026, further strengthens its ability to serve customers reliably and at lower costs.
