Russia is building over 10 nuclear reactors in several countries as part of its strategy to meet the growing global demand for energy. This effort is driven by both the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the needs of developing markets, according to a senior official from President Vladimir Putin’s government.
The Russian government is focusing on expanding its influence in the nuclear energy sector. Nuclear plants are currently under construction in countries such as Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Iran, and Turkey. This expansion is part of Russia’s broader strategy to maintain its position as a major global energy player, despite facing heavy sanctions on its oil and gas industries due to its invasion of Ukraine.
Boris Titov, the Kremlin’s special representative for international cooperation in sustainability, emphasized that Russia aims to become one of the world’s largest builders of new nuclear power plants. He noted that there is significant demand for nuclear energy, especially from developing nations seeking cleaner energy solutions and from tech companies running AI-driven data centers.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), global nuclear power capacity is expected to grow by 155% by 2050, reaching 950 gigawatts.
