Monticello Nuclear Plant to Operate Until 2050 with Federal Approval

by sthv

The Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant is set to continue providing clean energy to the region for the next two decades, following approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to extend its operation through 2050. The plant, which has been in operation since 1971, is a critical part of the local energy supply and economy.

Xcel Energy, which owns and operates the plant, announced today that it has secured federal authorization to extend the plant’s operating license. “For over 50 years, we have worked to maintain, invest in, and improve the Monticello plant to ensure it continues to serve the communities around us,” said Chris Church, Xcel’s chief nuclear officer. “By extending operations, we are reaffirming our commitment to the region and continuing our investment in Monticello.”

The federal approval extends the plant’s license for 20 years, from 2030 to 2050, as long as it also receives approval from state regulators. The plant’s current license, renewed in 2006, was set to expire in 2030.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has already approved an extension of operations at the Monticello plant through 2040. Xcel Energy will seek further approval from the PUC for the remaining 10 years to reach the 2050 target.
