To combat waterlogging during heavy rains, the Coimbatore Corporation has installed generators to power motor pumps at two key underpasses: the Kaleeswara Mill underpass and the underpass below the old Avinashi Road flyover. This move aims to address frequent power outages that disrupt pump operations, leading to flooding in these areas.
A senior Corporation official explained, “When power fails, the motor pumps stop working, and water levels can rise up to two feet in just five minutes. This has been a persistent issue during heavy rainfall. By installing generators, we can ensure the pumps run without interruption, keeping traffic flowing smoothly.”
The Kaleeswara Mill underpass now has a 125 kVA generator, installed at a cost of ₹11 lakh, while the old Avinashi Road flyover underpass is equipped with a 160 kVA generator, costing ₹14 lakh.
In addition to the generators, both underpasses have been upgraded with new high-capacity motor pumps, replacing outdated diesel-powered models that were over 25 years old. The Kaleeswara Mill underpass now features three pumps: one 36 hp motor and two 21 hp motors. The old Avinashi Road flyover underpass has five pumps, including two 36 hp motors, one 24 hp motor, one 28 hp motor, and one 15 hp motor. These pumps are crucial for draining rainwater quickly and preventing flooding, especially during the monsoon season.
The official also highlighted that groundwater seepage has been a contributing factor to the persistent water accumulation in these underpasses. “Seepage keeps the surface covered with water. Once the groundwater levels drop, the underpasses will stay dry,” the official added.
This initiative is expected to significantly reduce waterlogging issues and ensure safer, more efficient traffic movement during heavy rains.
