The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has completed preparations for snow clearance in Barubari and other areas, ensuring readiness with a robust deployment of machinery and manpower. On January 16, SMC Commissioner Dr. Owais Ahmed announced that modified tractors, 4×4 vehicles, JCBs, loaders, and other equipment have been mobilized for efficient snow removal operations.
To oversee the process, the SMC has formed ward-level teams, with district officials and junior engineers (JEs) supervising the efforts. Dr. Owais explained, “We have established a dual monitoring system for both mechanical and manual snow clearing to ensure smooth operations.” He emphasized that over 5,000 lanes and bylanes will be cleared manually, supported by adequate manpower, while 1,500 kilometers of roads will be cleared using machinery.
In addition to snow removal, the SMC has positioned water pumps at key locations to address potential waterlogging issues after the snow is cleared. “Our control room, equipped with GPS monitoring, operates 24/7 to track machinery in real time and promptly respond to public complaints received via phone or social media,” Dr. Owais added.
The SMC has also ensured regular inspections of pumping stations to maintain their functionality. This proactive approach aims to effectively address challenges posed by snowfall and related issues in the city. Dr. Owais reassured residents that the SMC is fully prepared to handle the situation and minimize disruptions caused by the winter weather.
