Renewable energy nonprofit Empowered by Light has teamed up with Enphase to deliver portable solar generators to communities impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires and to firefighting crews tackling the blazes. The initiative aims to replace traditional diesel generators with clean, renewable energy solutions during disaster response efforts.
“These solar generators will supply essential power while helping firefighters and communities move away from diesel generators, which have long been the go-to power source during natural disasters,” said Moira Hanes, executive director of Empowered by Light. “This project is a step toward breaking the cycle of relying on fossil fuels to respond to environmental crises.”
The two Bay Area-based organizations have distributed 25 Enphase IQ PowerPack 1500s, portable solar generators equipped with solar modules. These devices can charge critical equipment such as cell phones, laptops, radios, and lighting, providing reliable energy in areas with limited or no electricity.
Of the generators deployed, a dozen were sent to firefighting strike teams to power radios and cell phones, ensuring seamless communication during operations. Another six units were provided to World Central Kitchen to support community centers in low-income areas without power. These generators will supply lighting and free charging stations for personal devices, offering vital assistance to affected residents.
“These solar generators will deliver renewable energy to firefighters working in remote or power-deprived areas, enabling them to maintain critical communications,” said Richard Burt, a retired Las Vegas Fire-Rescue Captain and founder of a solar energy and fire education initiative. Burt is assisting in coordinating the deployment of the devices.
The collaboration highlights the growing role of renewable energy in disaster response, offering sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel-dependent systems while supporting both emergency responders and vulnerable communities.
