Rochdale-based PTG Holroyd Precision has unveiled the HG500, a groundbreaking helical profile grinder designed to meet the diverse needs of manufacturers in the air and refrigeration compressor industry. The company describes the HG500 as “the world’s most versatile, ultra-high-performance machine” for precision grinding helical profiles, catering to both small and large-scale production requirements.
The HG500 is capable of grinding helical rotors ranging from 50mm to 510mm in diameter, with a maximum profile depth of 130mm and a weight capacity of up to 1,500kg. This makes it suitable for producing some of the largest helical rotors used in refrigeration and air-compressor manufacturing.
Mark Curran, Sales Director at PTG Holroyd, explained the motivation behind the new machine: “Following the upgrade of our TG Series thread grinding machines, we identified a growing demand for a large-capacity helical rotor grinder. The HG500 not only handles a wide range of rotor sizes but also supports the production of the largest, most energy-efficient helical profiles.”
The HG500 offers flexibility in production strategies. In its standard configuration, the machine can use either a 500mm vitrified dressable aluminium oxide grinding wheel for versatile production and product development or plated CBN wheels for cost-effective high-volume manufacturing. For manufacturers working with the largest helical components, an optional 600mm vitrified dressable aluminium oxide grinding wheel is available, offering extended wheel life.
A key focus during the HG500’s development was ensuring user-friendly programming. PTG Holroyd achieved this by integrating the Siemens Sinumerik One CNC system, which provides powerful and intuitive controls. The company was the first UK machine tool manufacturer to adopt this advanced CNC system, having previously incorporated it into its HG350 and TG Series machines.
Curran highlighted the benefits of the collaboration with Siemens: “Being the first to use the Sinumerik One allowed us to tailor its capabilities to our specific needs. The result is a machine with industry-leading safety features, enhanced performance reporting, and robust industrial security. The system also offers improved connectivity and speed, thanks to additional Profinet and OPC/UA interfaces and a PLC that is up to 10 times faster than previous Siemens controls.”
The HG500 represents a significant advancement in helical rotor grinding technology, combining versatility, precision, and cutting-edge control systems to meet the evolving demands of modern manufacturing.
