Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful delivery of the third Steam Generator (SG) for the 10 x 700 Megawatt-electric (MWe) Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) fleet programme. The SG was dispatched ahead of schedule to the Kaiga Atomic Power Station (KAIGA) Units 5 and 6 in Karnataka.
The despatch ceremony took place at L&T’s A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, with the participation of Rajesh V, Director Technical of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), and his team.
L&T had previously set a global benchmark by delivering the first SG in just 33 months. This fast-track achievement highlights the company’s commitment to supporting India’s nuclear power expansion efforts.
Anil V Parab, Whole-Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President of L&T Heavy Engineering and L&T Valves, acknowledged the continuous efforts of both L&T and NPCIL teams in meeting tight delivery schedules. This achievement aligns with the Department of Atomic Energy’s (DAE) goal to install 22 GWe of nuclear power by 2032, as well as the broader vision for a 100 GWe capacity by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
L&T has committed to delivering 6-8 SGs each year as part of the 700 MWe Steam Generator programme. The company also plays a crucial role in advancing the Bharat Small Reactor (BSR) programme, which is integral to India’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
