Siemens Mobility has received its first order for Vectron locomotives equipped with battery technology, a breakthrough that allows the trains to operate on short distances without relying on overhead power lines. This innovation is especially beneficial for “last-mile” journeys and shunting operations, offering a greener alternative to traditional rail systems.
The locomotives feature a high-voltage lithium-ion battery and an intelligent battery management system, ensuring efficient charging and discharging. The development of this battery module was partially funded by the German federal program “Future of Rail Freight Transport,” which promotes advancements in rail technology.
The order, placed by eMyn AG—a subsidiary of Widmer Rail Services AG—includes two Vectron locomotives. The deal was financed through a structured solution provided by Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.
Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, highlighted the significance of the order: “We’re thrilled to expand our Vectron fleet with Widmer Rail Services AG. The new battery module enables fully electric operations, helping our customers cut CO2 emissions.”
Pierre Widmer, CEO of Widmer Rail Services AG, emphasized the operational benefits of the battery-powered locomotives. “They will make shunting operations more efficient, reduce costs, and streamline processes,” he said. Peter von Flüe from Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft added, “We’re proud to support sustainable rail transport and contribute to the growth of eMyn AG and Widmer Rail Services AG.”
The Vectron’s modular design ensures flexibility, allowing it to operate seamlessly in areas without overhead lines. This eliminates the need for additional shunting locomotives, offering both environmental and economic advantages.
This milestone underscores Siemens Mobility’s commitment to sustainable rail solutions. To date, more than 2,600 Vectron locomotives have been sold to 103 customers across 16 countries, collectively covering over one billion kilometers. The Vectron fleet is approved for use in 20 European countries, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency in real-world operations.
The introduction of battery-powered Vectron locomotives marks a significant step forward in reducing the rail industry’s carbon footprint while enhancing operational efficiency.
