Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has teamed up with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) to explore opportunities in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and related technologies. The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during India Energy Week 2025. The event was attended by Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, alongside senior executives from both companies.
The partnership aims to develop commercial projects in various BESS applications. These include utility-scale energy storage, grid stability solutions, renewable energy integration, microgrids, hybrid energy systems, industrial and commercial storage, backup power, EV charging infrastructure, and energy trading through ancillary services.
A Step Toward India’s Clean Energy Goals
Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director of TPREL, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. He stated, “This MoU with ONGC is a major milestone in India’s energy transition. Battery storage solutions will play a key role in improving grid reliability, integrating renewable energy more efficiently, and supporting India’s clean energy targets. Together, we aim to create advanced energy storage systems that build a sustainable and resilient power infrastructure.”
Arun Kumar Singh, Chairman and CEO of ONGC, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing ONGC’s commitment to clean energy. “As India progresses toward a low-carbon future, ONGC is focused on advancing green energy initiatives. Partnering with Tata Power Renewables is a strategic step to enhance the nation’s energy storage capabilities, which are critical for grid stability and large-scale renewable energy adoption. By leveraging our combined expertise, we aim to contribute significantly to India’s energy security and sustainability,” he said.
TPREL’s Leadership in Energy Storage
The collaboration aligns with TPREL and ONGC’s shared vision of strengthening India’s renewable energy ecosystem through innovative storage solutions. TPREL recently commissioned India’s largest Solar and BESS project in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The project includes a 100 MW solar PV plant paired with a 120 MWh utility-scale BESS. This achievement not only boosts India’s clean energy infrastructure but also sets a new benchmark for future BESS projects, supporting the country’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
