Global automotive supplier Magna has expanded its long-standing partnership with Mercedes-Benz, equipping the electrified G-Class SUV with its cutting-edge eDrive system. Magna, a major player in the automotive industry with 175,000 employees across 343 manufacturing sites and 107 engineering and sales centers in 28 countries, has been a trusted partner of Mercedes-Benz for decades. The collaboration spans various areas, including powertrain systems, electrification, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and full vehicle assembly.
Eric Wilds, Magna’s Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer, emphasized the importance of strong partnerships in driving innovation. “Our collaboration with Mercedes-Benz demonstrates how working together fosters technological advancements and shared growth,” he said.
Since 1979, Magna has produced over 500,000 units of the iconic G-Class SUV at its Graz, Austria facility. The plant, which operates as a carbon-neutral site, is uniquely capable of manufacturing vehicles with conventional, hybrid, and electric powertrains on the same production line. This flexibility positions Magna as a leader in adapting to the evolving automotive landscape.
In 2024, Magna began producing the eDS Duo, a high-performance eDrive system, at its Lannach, Austria facility. This system is now integrated into the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G 580, marking a significant milestone in the partnership. The eDS Duo represents Magna’s shift from internal combustion engines to advanced electric drivetrains.
Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, highlighted the significance of this development. “Having supplied transfer cases for three generations of the G-Class, we are proud to support its first fully electric version,” Ilunga said. “The eDS Duo showcases our ability to adapt and innovate in the era of electrification.”
The eDS Duo system features a dual e-motor setup with a power output of up to 240 kW, delivering impressive traction and off-road capabilities. A standout feature is the wheel-individual propulsion system, which enables advanced maneuvers like the ‘G-Turn,’ allowing the vehicle to rotate 360 degrees in place. With silicon carbide technology and optimized efficiency, the eDS Duo ensures top-tier performance while conserving energy.
This collaboration underscores Magna’s commitment to innovation and its role in shaping the future of electric mobility. The electrified G-Class, powered by Magna’s eDS Duo, represents a new chapter in the storied partnership between the two companies.
