KPIT Technologies, a global leader in mobility solutions, has partnered with Trentar Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. to commercialize its advanced sodium-ion battery technology. This collaboration will see KPIT transfer its cutting-edge battery technology to Trentar, which will then scale it for large-scale use in the electric mobility and energy storage markets.
Sodium-ion batteries are known for their long lifespan, retaining up to 80% of their capacity after 3,000 to 6,000 cycles. They also offer faster charging times compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Unlike lithium, sodium-ion batteries use more abundant raw materials, making them a cost-effective option for electric vehicles (EVs) in India. These batteries are expected to be suitable for various applications, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, public transport, grid storage, UPS systems, marine, and defense sectors.
Under the agreement, Trentar will invest in a new 3GWh sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility. In exchange, KPIT will receive an upfront technology transfer fee and ongoing royalty payments for the next eight years.
“Developing sustainable mobility technologies is at the heart of KPIT’s vision,” said Ravi Pandit, Chairman of KPIT Technologies. “Our sodium-ion battery technology results from extensive research and collaboration with leading institutions. We are excited to partner with Trentar to bring this innovative technology to market and expand its reach across various sectors.”
Trentar’s Founder and Vice Chairman, Subodh Menon, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Sodium-ion technology aligns perfectly with our strategic goals. It offers cost advantages, a simpler supply chain, and enhanced safety. We are committed to creating a product line that addresses diverse needs in mobility and energy storage, helping to drive a sustainable energy future.”
KPIT Technologies continues to be a key player in the automotive and mobility sector, leading the transition to software-defined vehicles through its expertise in embedded software, AI, and digital solutions. With engineering centers in Europe, the USA, Japan, China, Thailand, and India, KPIT supports industry leaders in shaping the future of mobility.
