GAIL (India) Ltd, a state-owned natural gas giant, has joined forces with Accelera by Cummins, the zero-emissions division of Cummins Inc., to accelerate clean energy and green technology initiatives in India. The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi, as announced by GAIL in a stock exchange filing.
The collaboration aims to combine Accelera’s expertise in new energy solutions with GAIL’s vast natural gas infrastructure. Together, they will explore opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage, aligning with India’s energy transition goals. This partnership is a key step in GAIL’s efforts to achieve its revised net-zero target by 2035, advancing from its earlier goal of 2040.
GAIL’s Green Hydrogen and Biogas Initiatives
GAIL has been actively pursuing green hydrogen projects, including the commissioning of a 10 MW Green Hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in April 2024. The electrolyzer for this project was supplied by Accelera by Cummins. The company has also successfully tested hydrogen blending in CNG and PNG networks and plans to expand this initiative further.
In the biogas sector, GAIL currently operates a 5 TPD Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi. The company has ambitious plans to establish 26 additional CBG plants across India within the next 3-4 years. To strengthen its renewable energy portfolio, GAIL has partnered with Leafiniti Bioenergy to develop 10 CBG plants and is collaborating with Coal India to produce Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) in West Bengal.
Additionally, GAIL is part of a joint venture to set up a 500 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant in Rajasthan, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Accelera by Cummins: Driving Zero-Emission Technologies
Accelera by Cummins, launched in March 2023, is Cummins Inc.’s zero-emissions technology brand. Led by President Amy Davis, Accelera focuses on providing clean energy solutions, including hydrogen fuel cells, battery systems, e-axles, traction drives, and electrolyzers.
In its first year, Accelera achieved significant milestones, such as starting electrolyzer production in Fridley, Minnesota, and supplying a 90-megawatt electrolyzer system for a waste-to-biofuels plant in Quebec. The company also partnered with Blue Bird to deploy 1,000 electric school buses in the U.S. and collaborated with Daimler Truck and PACCAR to establish a joint venture for localizing battery cell production in the U.S. This venture involves an investment of $2-3 billion for a 21-gigawatt-hour factory.
GAIL’s Role in India’s Energy Sector
GAIL (India) Ltd, established in 1984, is India’s leading natural gas processing and distribution company. It operates an extensive pipeline network and is involved in petrochemical production and renewable energy development. As a key player in India’s energy sector, GAIL has significantly contributed to the nation’s energy security by providing sustainable and cost-effective solutions.
Through strategic partnerships and projects, GAIL continues to expand its global presence while focusing on innovation and sustainability. This collaboration with Accelera by Cummins highlights GAIL’s commitment to driving India’s clean energy transition and supporting the country’s net-zero ambitions.
