Matel Motion & Energy Solutions has teamed up with Honda Power Pack Energy India (HEID) to improve battery-swapping technology for electric vehicles (EVs) in India. The partnership will combine Matel’s electric powertrain systems with Honda’s swappable battery solutions. This move aims to tackle common EV challenges, such as limited driving range and long charging times.
Battery-swapping is especially useful for commercial EV operators. It allows drivers to quickly replace empty batteries with fully charged ones at swap stations, reducing vehicle downtime and boosting efficiency. “We are thrilled to work with Matel Motion to speed up EV adoption in India,” said Tomohide Haraguchi, Vice President of Honda Power Pack Energy India. “Our solution is ideal for B2B customers who use their vehicles heavily every day. It helps them avoid the high costs and challenges of larger batteries or fast-charging infrastructure.”
Honda, known for its expertise in lithium-ion batteries, has already set up a battery-swapping network in Bangalore. The company plans to expand to Delhi and Mumbai soon. Under the partnership, Matel will ensure its powertrain systems work smoothly with Honda’s swappable batteries. For manufacturers already using Matel’s fixed battery systems, switching to swappable batteries will require only small changes, keeping the core technology intact.
Netaji Patro, Co-founder and Director of Business Development & Partnerships at Matel, highlighted the importance of the collaboration. “Working with HEID, a leader in battery technology, is a big step toward making EVs more practical and affordable for both manufacturers and users,” he said.
