Maruti Suzuki India has officially started operations at its new manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. The plant’s foundation stone was laid virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2022. This new facility adds to Maruti Suzuki’s existing production units in Gurgaon, Manesar (Haryana), and Hansalpur (Gujarat).
Together, these plants can produce up to 2.35 million vehicles annually. With rising demand for cars and SUVs in India and abroad, Maruti Suzuki aims to increase its total production capacity to 4 million units per year.
In its first phase, the Kharkhoda plant will produce 250,000 vehicles annually. The first model to roll off the assembly line will be the Brezza compact SUV. Once fully operational, the plant is expected to have a capacity of 1 million units per year. Additionally, Maruti Suzuki is planning another greenfield facility with a similar capacity, though its location is yet to be decided.
Record-Breaking Production in 2024
2024 has been a landmark year for Maruti Suzuki. The company became the first Indian automaker to produce over 2 million vehicles in a single calendar year. It also achieved the distinction of being the first global manufacturing plant under Suzuki Motor Corporation to reach this milestone.
The 2-millionth vehicle, an Ertiga MPV, was manufactured at the company’s advanced facility in Manesar, Haryana. Nearly 60% of the vehicles were produced in Haryana, while the remaining 40% came from Gujarat. The top five models produced during this period were the Baleno, Fronx, Ertiga, Wagon R, and Brezza.
