In a landmark move to boost renewable energy in Assam, Tata Power, a leading integrated power company in India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam Government. The agreement, finalized at the Advantage Assam 2.0 event, aims to develop up to 5000 MW of renewable energy projects across solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage sectors. The initiative will involve an investment of Rs. 30,000 crore over the next five years.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary of Power, Assam, and Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma. As part of the agreement, the Assam Government will provide approximately 20,000 acres of government-owned, encumbrance-free land for the projects. It will also facilitate private land acquisitions, support infrastructure development for efficient transmission connectivity, and assist in setting up Renewable Energy Parks. Additionally, the state will offer a single-window clearance system to streamline approvals and incentives.
The partnership also includes plans to identify land for Group Captive sites, enabling industries and tea gardens to access clean energy. To support the growing renewable energy sector, the initiative will introduce skill development programs to train a local workforce.
This collaboration aligns with Assam’s ambitious renewable energy goals, particularly in solar power. The state aims to achieve 500 MW of solar capacity by 2027. Tata Power’s involvement will accelerate Assam’s clean energy transition while helping it meet its renewable energy targets.
In a related development, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of Tata Power, signed a separate MoU with the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). This agreement focuses on scaling up rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) and is expected to create around 3,000 direct jobs.
Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, highlighted the significance of the agreements, stating, “These MoUs mark a crucial step in enhancing Assam’s renewable energy capacity. By leveraging the state’s potential in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage, and with strong policy support, infrastructure development, and skill-building initiatives, this collaboration will boost energy security, drive economic growth, and create employment opportunities.”
Tata Power has already made notable contributions to Assam’s clean energy landscape, including the installation of 20 MW of solar rooftop capacity, over 300 EV home chargers, and more than 20 public EV charging stations. These efforts underscore the company’s commitment to supporting Assam’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
The partnership reinforces Tata Power’s pivotal role in advancing India’s renewable energy goals. It also aligns with the country’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, further cementing Tata Power’s dedication to fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem.
