Coal India Limited (CIL) and EDF India have joined forces to create a Joint Venture Company (JVC) aimed at developing pumped storage projects in India. The two companies signed a Term Sheet to form a 50:50 partnership, which may also include renewable energy projects in the future.
The JVC will explore opportunities to develop pumped storage projects both independently and through project-specific subsidiaries, known as Project SPVs. These projects will be executed both domestically and internationally. The partnership marks a significant step in India’s push toward clean energy and sustainability.
Coal India Limited, a ‘Maharatna’ company under the Ministry of Coal, is the world’s largest coal producer. Headquartered in Kolkata, CIL operates 313 active mines across 84 mining areas in eight Indian states. These include 131 underground mines, 168 opencast mines, and 14 mixed mines.
EDF Group, a global leader in the energy transition, is an integrated energy company involved in power generation, distribution, trading, sales, and services. The company produces 490 TWh of energy annually, primarily from nuclear and renewable sources, including hydropower. EDF is also investing in advanced technologies to support the global shift toward low-carbon energy.
The partnership aligns with India’s clean energy goals and aims to boost innovation and environmental sustainability. EDF’s mission is to build a net-zero energy future through electricity and innovative solutions. The Group serves around 41.5 million customers and reported consolidated sales of €118.7 billion in 2024.
This collaboration between Coal India and EDF India is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s renewable energy sector while supporting global efforts to combat climate change.
