Accelera™ by Cummins, the clean energy division of Cummins Inc., has partnered with GAIL (India) Limited to advance the production, transport, and storage of green hydrogen in India. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), combines Accelera’s hydrogen production technology with GAIL’s extensive natural gas infrastructure to explore opportunities in hydrogen generation, blending, and distribution.
This partnership aims to develop projects across multiple sectors, including transportation, energy, and steel. It builds on the success of GAIL’s green hydrogen facility in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, where Accelera has already supplied a 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system.
“We believe this partnership will accelerate the use of green hydrogen in India,” said Alex Savelli, Global Commercial Leader – Electrolyzers at Accelera. “By integrating our advanced electrolyzer technology with GAIL’s infrastructure, we are well-positioned to lead the clean energy transition in India.”
The Vijaipur facility, launched in December 2024, uses two PEM HyLYZER®-1000 units that produce 4.3 tons of green hydrogen per day. This hydrogen is mixed with natural gas to support GAIL’s operations. This successful project is seen as a key step toward fulfilling India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
“By collaborating with Accelera, we aim to strengthen India’s hydrogen economy,” said Mr. Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director of Business Development at GAIL. “Together, we will work on developing a sustainable hydrogen value chain and support India’s goal of producing 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030.”
The partnership will also focus on exchanging knowledge about hydrogen blending with natural gas, creating industry standards, and expanding the applications of green hydrogen. Electrolyzers are crucial in producing green hydrogen from renewable energy, an essential element of the clean energy transition. Accelera is a global leader in large-scale hydrogen production through PEM electrolysis, with more than 600 electrolyzer units deployed worldwide. Notable projects include a 20MW facility in Quebec, Canada, and a 25MW system in Florida, U.S.
Accelera, a business unit of Cummins Inc., offers a wide range of zero-emission solutions across various industries, enabling the transition to a sustainable future. The company specializes in batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, e-axles, traction motors, inverters, integrated powertrain solutions, and electrolyzers. Cummins, headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, operates in over 190 countries and territories, with a workforce of around 69,900 employees worldwide.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward India’s clean energy goals and the global transition to a more sustainable future.
