Energy Vault Expands Operations in Australia with Major Battery Storage Project

by sthv

Energy Vault, a leading provider of sustainable energy storage solutions, has secured a 14-year Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) with AEMO Services for its Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New South Wales (NSW). The agreement follows the state’s NSW Roadmap Tender Round 5 for Long Duration Storage.

The Stoney Creek BESS, developed in partnership with Enervest, an Australian energy project developer, will feature a 1.0 GWh battery system and a 125 MVA connection. This makes it one of the largest long-duration battery systems in the country, providing energy storage for up to 8 hours. The project aims to enhance grid reliability and aid Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

This development is part of Energy Vault’s global strategy to own and operate energy storage systems. The Stoney Creek project, alongside other projects such as the Calistoga Resiliency Center in California and the Cross Trails BESS in Texas, marks a significant step in the company’s expansion efforts.

As one of the largest battery storage projects in NSW, Stoney Creek BESS will be critical in supporting grid stability and integrating renewable energy. The project will help balance energy from intermittent renewable sources, reduce wholesale price volatility, and minimize the need for renewable curtailment.

The project is set to begin pre-construction and final design approvals, with regulatory permits and site security already in place. The successful LTESA award ensures the project will have a significant impact on the energy infrastructure of NSW.

Ross Warby, CEO of Enervest, highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating, “Securing the LTESA for Stoney Creek is a major step in Australia’s energy transition. Working with Energy Vault gave us a strong and proven partner in energy storage solutions, making our bid stronger and more comprehensive.”

Both Enervest and Energy Vault are dedicated to working with Indigenous communities and local stakeholders to maximize the project’s long-term benefits for the region. Energy Vault’s expertise in utility-scale energy storage includes proprietary battery, gravity, and green hydrogen technologies. The company’s flexible software platform optimizes energy storage across various applications, helping utilities and industries reduce energy costs while maintaining system reliability.

Enervest, an Australian-owned energy developer, brings over 15 years of experience in designing, constructing, and operating energy storage and generation assets. The company is leading efforts to advance Australia’s energy grid toward greater sustainability and resilience.
