The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has begun accepting applications for its new Food Truck Generator Electrification Pilot Program. The initiative aims to reduce noise and pollution from food trucks and trailers by offering financial incentives for businesses to replace their gasoline and diesel generators with cleaner, quieter, and more efficient battery-powered systems.
The program is open to licensed mobile food service businesses within Montgomery County. Thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), eligible businesses can access zero-interest financing and cash incentives to purchase and install electric generator systems. The funding is designed to help offset the cost of these systems, which typically range between $10,000 and $25,000.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the environmental benefits of the initiative. “Each generator replaced will save businesses thousands in fuel and maintenance costs, while removing the carbon emissions equivalent to four cars on the road,” he said. “This move from diesel to electric generators in food trucks will help reduce both noise and air pollution, creating a healthier environment for everyone.”
Paul G. Pinsky, Director of the Maryland Energy Administration, praised the program’s potential. “Montgomery County’s pilot is not only practical but also effective in reducing harmful emissions. This is exactly why our OPEN Energy initiative exists. We look forward to seeing more innovative efforts like this in the future.”
Food truck operators interested in the program must complete an application form. Once submitted, DEP will verify eligibility and, if necessary, request further information. DEP will then connect applicants with vendors and guide them through the process of applying for zero-interest loans from Climate First Bank, a partner of the Montgomery County Green Bank.
DEP Director Jon Monger emphasized the broader benefits of the program: “This initiative supports small businesses and contributes to reducing emissions, improving the quality of life in our communities. It aligns with our goals for sustainability and environmental stewardship, and we’re eager to see the positive impact it will have on both business owners and their customers.”
To qualify for the program, food truck operators must meet several requirements:
- Own a licensed mobile food service business in Montgomery County (or hold a mobile reciprocity license from another Maryland jurisdiction).
- Be registered and in good standing with the State of Maryland.
- Purchase an electric generator system that meets their food truck’s power needs.
- Provide photographs of the installed equipment and invoices for both the equipment and installation.
- Register as a vendor in the County Vendor Registration System to receive payments.
The deadline to submit applications for this grant is January 31, 2026.
